the 1967 German Grand Prix was Jacky Ickx’ second Grand Prix entry, albeit in a F2 car, that were allowed to race among the faster & more powerful F1 cars, to increase the number of entrants & make the race more interesting to watch for the spectators
Ickx, despite of his underpowered Matra, qualified third fastest overall, humiliating almost the entire F1 field
but entered in the separate F2 class Ickx had to start the Grand Prix on the back of grid, in 18th place
after the start he quickly moved his way up the ranks & was lying a solid 5th within 4 laps
unfortunately the gruelsome Eifel track took its tole on the Matra car, damaging the front suspension (from the many jumps) & Ickx had to retire
a first showing of his Ringmeister capabilities …
